Arctic Explorer, Boat and Crew to be Spotlight Exhibit at 2010 Seattle Boat Show
December 12, 2009 Seattle – The Seattle Boat Show, Indoors + Afloat, (www.seattleboatshow.com) is pleased to announce that the renowned 57-foot Nordhavn, Bagan, which took owner Sprague Theobald safely through the Northwest Passage on a five month epic journey, will be a feature exhibit at the 2010 Seattle Boat Show January 29-February 6, 2010. Bagan will be showcased on the water at South Lake Union and highlights will include tours of Bagan given by members of the crew responsible for bringing the vessel across the Arctic Circle – a feat accomplished by very few private boats. Each person that takes a tour will also receive a DVD with video footage from this extraordinary adventure. Additionally Theobold will be conducting seminars at Qwest Field Event Center throughout the nine day show where he’ll focus on the craziest, scariest and most exhilarating moments of the trip.
Aside from seeking out great adventure, Theobald’s mission for traversing the elusive passage was to document the little-explored area – which he did with incredible underwater photography as well as with recording and editing equipment custom outfitted in Bagan’s pilothouse. The Emmy-award winning film producer/director is currently logging and editing more than 250 hours of HD video footage and audio diaries captured during the voyage for his movie Braving The Northwest Passage which will be his 5th full-length documentary. He has received interest in it from several major broadcast outlets. But visitors to the boat can get a sneak preview; trailers of the film will be on hand for anyone who comes aboard. at www.NorthwestPassageFilm.comBagan’s expedition covered 8,500 miles and included many dramatic events that pitted the crew against foul weather, technical issues, icebergs the size of Manhattan skyscrapers, wildlife encounters, personality conflicts, and so on. Notable was a harrowing two day experience where the boat was trapped and frozen in. They tried everything to escape and at one point the boat was being driven towards a rocky coast and the crew prepared to abandon ship. This and much more was captured in 250- hours of stunning high-definition video footage – including underwater shots, surreal landscapes, active glaciers, wildlife, and historical landmarks including grave sites from the doomed Franklin Expedition of 1845.
“It was worth the risk, but I would not do it again.” Theobald stated in an interview with Yachting Magazine. "We have yet to talk publicly about the more terrifying moments of the trip." MotorBoating Magazine also captured the expedition in a 4-part series.
